காரைக்கால் அம்மையார் - மாங்கனி பெற்றது

சோழ நாட்டில் காரைக்கால் என்ற துறைமுகப் பட்டினத்தில் தனதத்தன் என்ற ஒரு வணிகர் இருந்தார். அவருக்குப் புனிதவதி என்று ஒரு மகள் இருந்தாள். புனிதவதி மிகுந்த சிவபக்தி உள்ளவளாக வளர்ந்தாள். திருமண வயது வந்தபின் அவளைப் பரமதத்தன் என்ற வணிகனுக்குத் திருமணம் செய்துவைத்தனர். அவர்கள் இருவரும் காரைக்காலில் வாழ்ந்து வந்தனர்.

ஒரு நாள் காலையில் பரமதத்தன் ஒரு ஏவலாள் மூலமாக இரு மாம்பழங்களைத் தன் வீட்டிற்குக் கொடுத்தனுப்பினான். அதன்பின் அவன் வீட்டிற்கு ஒரு சிவனடியார் வந்தார். புனிதவதியார் அவருக்கு உணவு படைத்தார். அப்போது கறிவகைகள் எதுவும் சமைக்கப்படவில்லை. அதனால் இலையில் கணவன் கொடுத்தனுப்பிய மாம்பழங்களுள் ஒன்றைப் பரிமாறினார். அந்தச் சிவனடியார் உண்டு மகிழ்ந்து, அவளை வாழ்த்திவிட்டுச் சென்றார்.

பகலில் பரமதத்தன் உணவு உண்ண வீட்டிற்கு வந்தான். புனிதவதியார் எஞ்சி இருந்த ஒரு மாம்பழத்தை இலையில் இட்டார். அது மிகவும் சுவையாக இருந்தது. அவன் இரண்டாம் மாம்பழத்தையும் இடும்படி சொன்னான். ஆசையாகக் கேட்கும் கணவனுக்கு இட மாம்பழம் இல்லையே என்று புனிதவதியார் மனம் வருந்தினார். உள்ளே சென்று மனம் கசிந்து இறைவனை வேண்டினார். அப்போது சிவனருளால் அவர் கையில் ஒரு மாம்பழம் வந்தது. மிகவும் மகிழ்ந்து அதனைக் கணவனுக்கு இட்டார். அதனை அவன் உண்டான். இந்தப் பழம் முதலில் உண்ட பழத்தைவிட இன்னும் சுவையாக இருந்தது.

"இந்தப் பழம் உனக்கு எங்குக் கிடைத்தது" என்று அவன் கேட்டான். புனிதவதியார் அப்பழம் வந்த உண்மையைச் சொன்னார். அதனைக் கேட்ட அவன், "அப்படி என்றால் சிவனைக் கேட்டு இன்னொரு பழத்தை வரவழைத்து எனக்குத் தா" என்றான். புனிதவதியாரும் உள்ளே சென்று இறைவனை வேண்டினார். இறைவன் அருளால் இன்னொரு மாம்பழம் அவர் கையில் வந்தது. அவர் அதனைக் கணவனிடம் கொடுத்தார். அந்தப் பழத்தை அவன் தன் கையில் வாங்கியவுடன் அது மறைந்துவிட்டது. இந்த அற்புதத்தைக் கண்ட பரமதத்தன் புனிதவதியாரைத் தெய்வம் என்றே கருதினான்.

பின்னாளில் புனிதவதியார் இறைவழிபாட்டில் முழுமையாக ஈடுபட்டார். "காரைக்கால் அம்மையார்" என்று அழைக்கப்பெற்றார்.. இவர் அறுபத்துமூன்று நாயன்மார்களுள் ஒருவர்.

இன்றும் காரைக்காலில் ஆனி மாதத்தில் பௌர்ணமி நாளில் மாங்கனித் திருவிழா நடைபெறுகின்றது.

மாங்கனி = mango fruit; = மாம்பழம்;

கறிவகைகள் = vegetable dishes; = காய்களால் செய்யப்படும் கறி, கூட்டு, முதலிய உணவு வகைகள்;

பரிமாறுதல் = to serve food; = இலையில் உணவு இடுதல்;

எஞ்சி இருத்தல் = to remain; to be left behind; = மிஞ்சுதல்;

மனம் கசிதல் = feeling very emotional - with devotion, pity, etc; = உள்ளம் உருகுதல்;

அற்புதம் = wonder; miracle; something that is amazing; = அதிசயம்;

பின்னாளில் = at a later date; = சில காலம் கழிந்தபின்;

இறைவழிபாடு = worship of God; = கடவுளை வணங்குதல்;

Karaikkal ammaiyar - receiving mangoes

There lived a merchant named Danadhaththan in a port city called Karaikkal in Chola country. He had a daughter named Punithavathi. She grew up as an ardent devotee of Siva. When she had grown old enough for marriage, she got married to a merchant named Paramadhaththan. They both lived in Karaikkal.

One morning Paramadhaththan sent two mangoes to his home through a servant. Some time after that, a Siva devotee came to his house. Punithavathi served food to that devotee. At the time, no vegetable dishes were ready. So she served on the plate one of the two mangoes that had been sent by her husband. That devotee enjoyed the food and went on his way after blessing her.

Paramadhaththan came home at noon for lunch. Punithavathi served the remaining mango on his plate. It was very tasty. So he asked for the second mango too. Punithavathi felt bad that she did not have the mango to serve her dear husband. She went inside and prayed intensely. At that moment, with Siva's grace, a mango came into her hands. She felt thrilled and served it to her husband. He ate it. This fruit was tastier than the first fruit.

He asked her about where she got that fruit. Punithavathi told him the truth of how she got that mango. Upon hearing it, he demanded her to ask Siva to get another mango for him. Punithavathi went inside and prayed to Siva. With God's grace another mango came into her hands. She gave that to her husband. As soon as he had received that fruit in his hands, it vanished. Upon seeing seeing this miracle, Paramadhaththan concluded that Punithavathi was a divine person.

At a later date, Punithavathi fully engaged herself in Siva worship. She came to be known as 'Karaikkal ammaiyar'. She is one of the 63 nayanmars.

Even today, the mango festival is celebrated in Karaikkal on the full moon day in the month of Ani (June-July).
