சம்பந்தர் - எலும்பைப் பெண் ஆக்கியது

மயிலாப்பூரில் சிவநேசர் என்னும் வணிகர் வாழ்ந்து வந்தார். அவர் பெரும் செல்வர். சிறந்த சிவபக்தரும் ஆவார். அவருக்குப் பூம்பாவை என்று ஒரு மகள் இருந்தாள். திருஞான சம்பந்தரின் பெருமைகளைச் சிவநேசர் கேள்விப்பட்டார். அவருக்கே தம் மகளைத் திருமணம் செய்துகொடுக்க விரும்பினார்.

ஒரு நாள் தோட்டத்தில் பூம்பாவையை நாகப்பாம்பு கடித்துவிட்டது. அவள் இறந்தாள். சிவநேசர் அஸ்தியை ஒரு குடத்தில் இட்டு வீட்டில் வைத்திருந்தார்.

அதன்பின் சில ஆண்டுகள் கழிந்தன, அப்போது திருஞான சம்பந்தர் மயிலாப்பூருக்குத் தலயாத்திரையாக வந்தார். உள்ளூர் அடியார்கள் சிவநேசரைப் பற்றியும், அவர் மகளைப் பற்றியும் அவரிடம் சொன்னார்கள். அந்த விவரங்களைக் கேட்டுச் சம்பந்தர் மனம் இரங்கினார்.

பூம்பாவையின் அஸ்தி இருந்த குடத்தைக் கொண்டுவரச் சொன்னார். அக்குடத்தை மயிலாப்பூர்க் கோயில் வாசலில் வைக்கச் செய்தார். ஊர்மக்கள் எல்லாம் சுற்றி நின்றனர். சம்பந்தர், "மட்டிட்ட புன்னை" என்று தொடங்கும் பதிகம் பாடிச், சிவனை வேண்டினார். பத்தாம் பாட்டின் முடிவில் குடம் உடைந்தது. அழகிய பெண்ணாக உயிரோடு பூம்பாவை எழுந்து நின்றாள். அடியார்கள் எல்லாம் ஹரஹர என்று ஒலி எழுப்பினர்.

பூம்பாவை சம்பந்தரின் காலில் விழுந்து வணங்கினாள். சிவநேசரும் சம்பந்தரை வணங்கினார். சம்பந்தர் பூம்பாவையைத் தமக்கு மகள் போலக் கருதினார். அவர்கள் இருவரையும் வாழ்த்தினார். பிறகு தமது தலயாத்திரையைத் தொடர்ந்தார்.

Sambandar - turning bones into a girl

Once there was a merchant named Sivanesar in Mylapore. He was very rich. He was a great Siva devotee too. He had a daughter named Pumbavai. Sivanesar heard about Thirugnana Sambandar's greatness. He wished to get his daughter married to Sambandar.

One day when Pumbavai was in the garden, a cobra bit her. She died. Sivanesar put her bones and ashes in a pot and kept it at home.

A few years passed. Then, Thirugnana Sambandar came to Mylapore during one of his pilgrimages. The local devotees told him about Sivanesar and his daughter Pumbavai. Sambandar took pity after hearing those details.

He asked for that pot with bones to be brought. He had it placed in front of the Mylapore temple. All the townsfolk assembled. Sambandar sang a padhigam that started with the phrase "mattitta punnai" and prayed to Siva. At the end of tenth song, the pot broke. Pumbavai stood alive as a beautiful girl. All the devotees shouted "hara hara".

Pumbavai prostrated at Sambandar's feet. Sivanesar also prostrated at Sambandar's feet. Sambandar considered Pumbavai to be his daughter. He blessed them both. Later on, he continued on his pilgrimage.
